It’s likely one of the biggest days in her life…and she’s asked you to be a part of it! Being invited to be a part of the wedding party is a very special moment for anyone, as it lets you know just how important the bride and groom feel you are in their lives, so much that they want you beside them as they make their journey into the next chapter of their lives.
We all know the typical and traditional bridal responsibilities, where the bride’s family hosts the wedding, and the groom’s family hosts the rehearsal dinner and possibly fund the honeymoon for the bride and groom. But when you’re asked to be a bridesmaid or the bride’s maid of honor, what does that entail? It may come as a surprise to some, but accepting the bride’s invitation into the wedding party means also accepting a bit of responsibility in helping the bride prepare for her big day! Make sure you’re on-board and ready to help before you accept her kind request to be part of her very special day.
As a bridesmaid you’ll be expected to help the bride brainstorm with ideas on where to have the wedding, themes and wedding colors, and she may ask for you to accompany her to different venues as she searches for the perfect setting for her big day. Most brides ask their bridesmaids to accompany them to their wedding dress appointments, and if you’re lucky, they may even ask your opinion on your bridesmaid dress. Help her figure out what looks great, not so great, and what dress is THE dress! As a bridesmaid you may also want to offer her with help addressing her wedding or shower invitations if you have nice penmanship. Coordinate with the maid of honor, who will be likely hosting the bridal shower and bachelorette party. She may need help picking out invitations, selecting a venue, making favors or coming up with ideas for games/activities at the bridal shower. As a bridesmaid, you’re everyone’s right-hand-gal, and your help will assist the bride in making sure her event goes perfectly. Make sure you’re a good communicator and are familiar with the bride and groom’s plans for the big day. As the bride and groom may get a bit frazzled or nervous before ceremony time, you’ll be cool, calm, collected and knowledgeable about what is going on and what should be where, etc. On her big day, help the bride with getting into her dress and makeup. If the bride needs anything, be it food, a drink, rings or simply a calming hug, you’re there. And remember, if you’re the maid of honor, you’ll want to have a speech prepared for the reception. Sounds like a lot, right? It certainly is, but it will also be fun and will increase your bond with your best friend bride.
Are you the bride? Make the invitation into your wedding party a special time for those you’ll be asking. One of the biggest trends is sending an actual wedding party invitation to your hopeful bridal attendees which includes a small poem asking them in a special way to be your bridesmaid. If you’re not that creative, you can find a variety of poem suggestions online, most of which have a poem about what a great friend the person is, or what they mean to the bride, and then asks them to be the bridesmaid, junior bridesmaid, flower girl, matron of honor or maid of honor at the end. It’s a great way to make the person feel special when they find out you’re asking them to be in your wedding party.
